Beccles lies on the River Waveney in the Waveney Valley on the edge of the Broads National Park and is a popular boating centre.

Beccles is a charming market town, made up of small market squares and winding streets, most notable is New Market, which still hosts a weekly market and which features the imposing detached 16 th century bell tower of St Michael’s Church. The 97 feet tall tower is perpendicular gothic in style and dominates the skyline.

Catherine Suckling married the Reverend Edmund Nelson, a former curate of Beccles, at the church in 1749. Their son, the celebrated naval hero Horatio Nelson was born in 1758.

Just outside of Beccles, Roos Hall is renowned for being one of Suffolk’s most haunted houses. Legend says that at Christmas a ghostly carriage driven by a headless man careers down the driveway towards the house.

Beccles has many good transport options with Bus services linking the town with Norwich, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Bungay and Southwold. The town is also served by the Beccles Railway Station on the East Suffolk Line between Ipswich and Lowestoft with ongoing connections to London Liverpool Street and Cambridge.

Beccles also has an airfield located at Ellough, around 3 miles south-east of the town. Once used as a heliport servicing the North Sea petrochemical industry, it is now a base for light aircraft, parachuting, and Kart Racing.

Education is of a high standard in Beccles with the Sir John Leman High School and the SET Beccles School for secondary education, and three primary schools operating in Beccles. Residents and their families are well catered for.

Leisure activities are also well catered for with the annual Beccles Carnival and Family Fun weekend held during the third weekend in August, which includes the ever popular Duck Race on the River Waveney. The Antiques Street Market held in May and August. The annual Food and Drink Festival held in May. The Beccles Lido is an open-air heated swimming pool. There are many cafes and restaurants to choose from.

There are two Scout Association groups, Girlguiding groups, Beccles Sea Cadets and Beccles Royal Marines Cadets, and the town is also home to 759 (Beccles) Air Cadets.

Beccles Cricket Club runs two senior men’s teams, as well as a women’s softball team.

Beccles main football club is Beccles Town, established in 1919.
